Jagielo homers but Yankees downed by ValleyCats

Staten Island, NY - August 17th - The Staten Island Yankees were downed by the Tri-City ValleyCats by a score of 6-3 on Saturday night.

Tri-City was first on the board, scoring two runs in the top of the second. Ronnie Mitchell began the inning with a walk before Jon Kemmer doubled and then reached third on a fielding error by centerfielder Brandon Thomas. Mitchell came home on the play to make it 1-0. After Ryan Dineen struck out swinging, Chan Moon reached on a fielder's choice; and Kemmer came around to score when Hector Crespo committed a throwing error.

After Derek Toadvine and Abiatal Avelino both struck out in the sixth, Eric Jagielo hit a solo shot over the right field wall to put the Yankees on the board.

In the seventh, Tri-City scored four runs to take a 6-1 advantage. Kemmer, Moon, and James Ramsay all walked to load the bases. Tyler White then hit a two-run single. Stefan Lopez then replaced Andury Acevedo on the mound. Lopez threw a wild pitch, allowing Ramsay to score from second and White to advance to third. Michael Martinez later reached on a fielding error by left fielder Daniel Lopez, and White scored on the play.

Yeicok Calderon led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk, and then scored on a triple by Brandon Thomas. Thomas later scored when Hector Crespo doubled.

Troy Scribner earned the win for Tri-City after pitching 5.1 innings of relief and allowing one earned run off four hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. Tyler Brunnemann picked up his first save. Rookie Davis suffered his second loss. He threw 2.2 innings and gave up two unearned runs.

The Yankees will take on the Tri-City ValleyCats again at home tomorrow at 4:00PM. They will then travel to Brooklyn for a doubleheader on Monday before returning home on Wednesday to face the Cyclones at 7:00PM.
