LANCASTER • The High Desert Mavericks saw their lead for the final playoff spot in the California League South Division fall to just half a game with a 9-3 loss to the Lancaster JetHawks on Sunday evening.

The Mavericks (58-67) lead the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (58-68) for the league's last postseason berth with 15 games to play in the regular season. The two teams begin a three-game series in Adelanto on Tuesday.

High Desert fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning Sunday. The Mavs tied the score with two runs in the top of the fourth, but never led. The JetHawks regained the lead with two more runs in the fifth, then added four insurance runs in the seventh.

The Mavs managed just five hits for the game, with two each coming from Jabari Henry and Patrick Kivlehan. Henry doubled to lead off the seventh for the Mavs only extra-base hit, then scored on a single by Dillon Hazlett.

High Desert starter Stephen Landazuri allowed four runs - two earned - in six innings. He gave up three hits, struck out three and walked one. Reliever Matt Brazis surrendered four runs - all unearned - in one inning of work.

The Mavs are off Monday along with the rest of the Cal League.
