Eugene lead most of the way but an 8th inning Hillsboro rally gave the Hops the 3-game sweep. The Ems did not lack for base hits against starter Ryan Doran as the first two batters of the 1st and 2nd innings all singled. Doran was able to pitch out of both jams using a pair of strikeouts and a double play.
In the top of the 3rd, Ems starter Bryan Verbitsky walked the leadoff man Ryan Gebhardt. A bunt single from Taylor Ratliff and a sacrifice bunt by Josh Parr setup a Yogey Perez-Ramos sacrifice fly giving Hillsboro a 1-0 lead.
Eugene would answer back in the 4th with a two-out rally all started by a Marcus Davis walk. Edwin Moreno followed with a single and then Felipe Blanco tied the game with a single of his own. The next hitter, Michael Bass kept things going with an RBI single and the Ems led it 2-1.
Doran was able to pitch around back-to-back leadoff singles one more time in the 6th inning before Hillsboros bullpen came in to shut down the offense. Doran finished 6 innings scattering 10 hits and 2 walks on his way to a no decision.
Michael Kelly gave Eugene 3 innings of shutout baseball out of the pen pitching around a couple of singles and a couple of walks. Genison Reyes entered the game in the 8th and promptly walked the leadoff batter. It was the 4th time in the game that the Emeralds issued a free pass to the first hitter of an inning and for the second time it would come back to bite the Ems. The next two men singled loading the bases with one out. After a strikeout of cleanup hitter George Roberts, Reyes walked Danile Palka forcing in the tying run. Reyes got the second out of the inning when Randy McCurry popped out. Almost out of the jam, Elvin Soto dribbled one down the first base line that Reyes mishandled for an error allowing the go ahead run to score.
Hillsboro's bullpen retired 9 of the last 10 batters of the game, Blane Weller picked up the save as the Hops won their 7th straight in completing the three-game sweep.
The Ems will be welcoming in Salem-Keizer for the final three regular season home games Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Tickets are available at the PK Park box office opening at 10am or you can always buy and print tickets online at EmeraldsBaseball.com.
