Knapp Sparks Cutters Rout

WILLIAMSPORT - Williamsport exploded for seven runs in the first inning to propel themselves to a 13-5 win over the rival State College Spikes at Historic Bowman Field.

Williamsport did not waste any time releasing some frustration on the State College Spikes. In the bottom of the 1st inning Williamsport had the first seven batters reach and score to take an early 7-0 lead against Spikes starter Juan Bautista.

Justin Parr lead off the inning with a single followed by a single by Andrew Pullin that plated Parr to make it 1-0 Crosscutters. Dylan Cozens followed with a single that put Cutters on the corners. Zach Green then single in Pullin to make it 2-0 Cutters. It was Green's 36th RBI. Andrew Knapp followed with a double to plate Cozens and make it 3-0. Samuel Hiciano would draw a walk to load the bases for Herlis Rodriguez, who would single off the glove of 1st basemen David Washington into right field that would plate Green and Knapp to make it 5-0. Hiciano would score on a passed ball by Juan Bautista to make it 6-0. Malquin Canelo would cap the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center that score Rodriguez to make it 7-0 after one inning of play.

State College would answer in the top half of the second inning against Cutters starter Mitch Gueller. After Gueller retired the first two batters of the inning he would walk Luke Voit and Jimmy Bosco back-to-back. Matthew Young followed with a double over the head of right fielder Dylan Cozens to plate Voit and Bosco to cut the deficit to 7-2. Steven Ramos followed with double to deep left to plate Young and make it a 7-3 deficit.

Williamsport would get back on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the 2nd inning. Andrew Pullin reached on an error by David Washington. Dylan Cozens followed with a single to center that was misplayed by Steven Ramos which allowed Pullin to score, to make it 8-3 and Cozens to reach 3rd. Cozens would score on a sacrifice fly by Green to make it 9-3. Logan Pierce would double down the left field line to plate Samuel Hiciano, who reached on a fielder's choice, to make it 10-3.

Williamsport added a pair of runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to extend their lead over the Spikes. Andrew Knapp led off the inning with a double to right center. Samuel Hiciano would plate Knapp to make it 11-3. Hiciano would be plated on a double by Malquin Canelo past the 1st base bag to make it 12-3 Crosscutters.

State College would chip away at the Williamsport lead with a run in the top of the 6th inning. Jimmy Bosco doubled to right center to plate Mason Katz to make it a 12-4 deficit facing the Spikes.

Williamsport would get that run back in the bottom of the 6th inning when Herlis Rodriguez singled home Andrew Knapp to make it 13-3 in favor of the Crosscutters. That would cap the scoring for the Crosscutters.

State College would get a run in the top half of the 9th inning when Michael Schulze grounded into a double play. Jimmy Bosco scored on the play to make it a 13-5 deficit. Williamsport would go on to win by that final.

Spikes starter Juan Bautista took the loss as he went 1.2 innings, allowing 10 runs on nine hits and a walk. Bautista did not strikeout a batter before handing the ball over to Chase Berkshire in the 2nd inning. Berkshire went 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Berkshire struck out four Cutters before being replaced by Kyle Webb in the 6th inning. Webb surrendered a run on three hits and a walk in an inning of relief. Mitch Harris pitched the final two innings for the Spikes. Harris did not allow a base runner while striking out three.

Cutters starter Mitch Gueller would not factor into the decision despite leaving with the lead. Gueller allowed three runs on four hits in four innings of work. Gueller walked two batters and struck out three. Josh Warner earned the win with four innings of relief, in which he allowed one run on four hits and two walks. Warner struck out two Spikes. Jon Musser pitched the final inning for the Cutters. He allowed one run on one hit and two walks.

Cutters Carvings: The seven runs in the first inning were the most runs the Cutters put up against the Spikes in any game this season… Logan Pierce's RBI in the 2nd inning was his 1st RBI in 16 games (August 6th @ Tri-City)… Andrew Knapp finished the night with seven total bases (three doubles and a single)…
