RANCHO CUCAMONGA • The High Desert Mavericks limited the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes to four hits on Wednesday but still couldn't come away with win.
The Quakes shut out the Mavericks 2-0 to increase their California League South Division wild-card lead over the Mavs to 11⁄2 games. The two teams will play one more game at LoanMart Field on Thursday, before High Desert comes home to wrap up the season with a five-game set against the Lake Elsinore Storm starting Friday.
The Quakes (63-72) took the lead in the bottom of the first inning on O'Koyea Dickson's RBI triple. Chris Jacobs added a solo shot in the sixth.
Gustavo Gomez picked up the win after throwing five scoreless innings and combined on the shutout with Eric Eadington, Juan Noriega and Craig Stern - who picked up his third save after a perfect ninth.
Starter Bobby Shore took the loss for the Mavs (61-73) after giving up one on three hits in 3 1-3 innings. High Desert went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
