Kurt Spomer worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and another jam in the ninth to pick up a save and help the Burlington Bees defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4-3 on Saturday night.
Jamie Burke had a hunch on Saturday night and it paid off in a big way, helping the Bees (54-78, 28-39) earn the win in the first game of the final series of the year.
Andres Perez surrendered a two-run home run to Victor Roache with one out in the eighth to allow the Rattlers (59-74, 30-38) to pull within one run. Perez walked Parker Berberet to put the tying run on base. Jake Boyd came in and failed to get an out, loading the bases on a single and a walk. Boyd fired ball one to Dustin Houle and Burke came out of the dugout to pull Boyd and bring in Spomer (S, 6). Spomer induced a ground ball double play to get the Bees out of the inning with a 4-3 lead.
Wisconsin threatened again in the ninth when Max Walla reached second to lead off the inning after Wade Hinkle failed to catch a ball hit to Angel Rosa. Walla advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Tyrone Taylor. Michael Reed hit a high chopper to third and Garrett Cannizaro made a leaping grab to save a run and throw out Reed at first. Alfredo Rodriguez grounded out to second to end the game.
Burlington broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning, scoring three unearned runs off Harvey Martin (2-5). Exicardo Cayones and Julio Concepcion reached on back-to-back singles. Chevy Clarke laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt that was thrown away by Martin, allowing Cayones and Concepcion to score, and Clarke to go to third. Cannizaro knocked home Clarke on a sacrifice fly.
The Bees got the scoring started in the second against Tyler Wagner. Wagner issued a leadoff walk to Exicardo Cayones, who stole second and then scored on a one-out single by Chevy Clarke.
Wisconsin answered right back in the third against Tyler DeLoach. Dustin Houle lined a single up the middle to get the inning started. Max Walla walked and Tyrone Taylor was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs for Michael Reed. Reed hit a sacrifice fly to left field, which brought home Houle from third base. Alfredo Rodriguez flied out to center and Victor Roache struck out swinging to end the threat.
Robbie Powell entered for DeLoach with runners at the corners in the fifth and struck out Rodriguez. Powell (3-1) tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the victory.
