Brooklyn, NY - Tanner Rust hit his first professional home run, helping the Aberdeen IronBirds reclaim first place after a 7-0 defeat of the Brooklyn Cyclones.
Rust came up with two outs in the top of the second inning and hit a line drive home run in the right field corner. It put Aberdeen on top 1-0, and Sebastian Vader made it stick.
Vader allowed just one hit and two base runners through the first three innings, and three hits through five.
In the sixth, the IronBirds struck again. Trey Mancini led off with a double down the right field line. He advanced to third on a Conor Bierfeldt groundout and scored on an Austin Wynns RBI single, making it 2-0 Aberdeen. With Jared Breen at the plate, Wynns stole second, his first swiped bag of the season. Breen then hit a soft single to right center and Wynns was able to score, increasing Aberdeen's lead to 3-0.
Vader allowed a hit in the seventh, but escaped unharmed. He went seven innings, allowing four hits and one walk, striking out four.
Aberdeen was not done scoring, as in the top of the eighth, they added to their 3-0 lead. Mancini led off with a single, and Bierfeldt doubled. Wynns then came up and hit another RBI single, making it 4-0. Breen then came up with Bierfeldt on third and Wynns on first and hit into a double play, but it scored Bierfeldt, making it 5-0 IronBirds.
Aberdeen kept the offense going in the ninth inning. Mike Yastrzemski hit a double to right field and Jeff Kemp then walked. Mancini came up and hit an RBI single, giving him a 4-for-5 night, with two runs scored, a double, and an RBI. Kemp moved up to second and then scored on a Bierfeldt RBI base knock, making the score 7-0.
