Hawks end Volcanoes season with 11-7 win
09/05/2013 1:15 AM ET

The Boise Hawks ended the Volcanoes' season on Wednesday with an 11-7 victory at Volcanoes Stadium to clinch the Northwest League South Division title.

Neither starting pitching would make it through the third inning with Hawks' starter Duane Underwood getting booted with one out in the second. He would give up three runs on two hits with two walks to the Volcanoes.

The Hawks jumped out to the first lead, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first. Kevin Encarnacion once again led off the game with a hit, singling to right and scoring later in the inning on a Justin Marra two-RBI double. Two errors would be committed in the inning by the Volcanoes, one by the shortstop Jeremy Sy and one by pitcher Chris Johnson (6-3).

Salem-Keizer took the lead away from Boise in the second with three runs of their own. Tyler Horan led off the frame with a walk, Leo Rojas singled and Blake Miller walked to load the bases. Ryan Jones then hit a sacrifice to deep center field to score Horan and open up the scoring for the home squad. John Polonius then hit a two-RBI single to score Rojas and Miller and make it 3-2 Volcanoes. Polonius would go 3-for-3 before having to leave the game with a pulled hamstring.

The Hawks then scored five runs in the third and would not give back up the lead. Marra hit yet another two-RBI double and would score in the next at-bat on a Rony Rodriguez double.

Ryan Tuntland would hit a two-run homerun to opposite field in the eighth to make it an 11-7 game, but that is where the scoring would stop as Eddie Orozco shut down the game in the ninth for the Hawks, striking out two. The game would be ended as Lance Rymel threw out Leo Rojas trying to steal third with two outs.

The Hawks will now head to the Northwest League Championship Series to take on the winners of the North Division playoff, the Vancouver Canadians.
