PEARL, MS -- Christian Bethancourt has been promoted to the Atlanta Braves, becoming the 14th Mississippi Braves player to receive a promotion directly to Atlanta from Double-A Mississippi. Bethancourt is one of more than 80 former M-Braves to be called up to the show in the team's nine-year history.
The 22-year-old catcher finished the 2013 season with the M-Braves, hitting .277 in 90 games. Bethancourt recorded 21 doubles, 12 home runs and 45 RBI on the season. He strung together a 40-game on-base streak June 13 through August 14. During that span, he raised his batting average from .242 to .292 and broke Willie Cabrera's previous M-Braves record of 38 games which was set in 2009.
Bethancourt was selected as a Southern League Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star in 2013. He was also named to the 15th annual SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game World Roster for the second-consecutive season. The Panamanian entered the season ranked as the third-best prospect and the Best Defensive Catcher in the Atlanta Braves system according to Baseball America. He was signed by the Braves as a free agent on March 12, 2008.
The Mississippi Braves 2013 season concluded Sunday at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile. The BayBears took the SLCS three-games-to-one, advancing to the Southern League Championship Series for the third consecutive season. The M-Braves open the 2014 season Thursday, April 3 against the Mobile BayBears at Trustmark Park.
