The Big 12 Conference has announced that Tulsa and ONEOK Field will host the 2015 edition of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship. The event will take place May 20-24 in downtown Tulsa.
The announcement was made following the conclusion of the Big 12 fall meetings of its faculty athletic representatives, athletics directors and senior woman administrators representing each member institution.
"We are pleased to add Tulsa to our championship host site roster, while maintaining our long-standing relationship with Oklahoma City, "said Commissioner Bob Bowlsby.
The 2015 baseball championship will mark only the third time in the history of the Big 12 Conference that the postseason tournament has not been held in Oklahoma City. The event will be held in Oklahoma City in 2014 and will return to the state's capital city in 2016.
"We are proud to have been chosen for this prestigious event and are ready to do all that we can to support the needs of the event organizers, visiting schools, fans and local enthusiasts," said Ray Hoyt, senior vice president of the Tulsa Sports Commission and VisitTulsa.com, divisions of the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce.
ONEOK Field has been the home for the Tulsa Drillers, the Double A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, since opening in Tulsa's historic Greenwood District in 2010.
Drillers General Manager Mike Melega said, "The Drillers organization is excited to be hosting this important event. In four great seasons, ONEOK Field has proven to be an excellent host site for big baseball events such as our major league exhibition with the Colorado Rockies, the Texas League All-Star Game and four sold out Bedlam Games, and now we look forward to adding the Phillips 66 Baseball Championship to that list.
Tulsa Mayor Dewey F. Bartlett, Jr. said, "In choosing Tulsa, the Big 12 and NCAA recognize that our city is a world-class destination for sporting events at the highest level."
The Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship has been played in Oklahoma City 16 times since the league began competition in 1996-97. The only other stadium to host the event was The Ballpark at Arlington in Arlington, Texas in 2002 and 2004.
Ticket details for the 2015 Championship at ONEOK Field will be announced at a later date.
