Even though the 2013 Eastern League season has concluded, eight Akron Aeros players will still be in action in the Fall and Winter Leagues. The Arizona Instructional League is already underway and the 2013 Arizona Fall League kicks off on October 8.
The Arizona Instructional League began play on September 20 and runs until October 14. LHP KYLE CROCKETT, C JAKE LOWERY, and INF GIOVANNY URSHELA represent the Aeros among the Cleveland Indians' 55-man roster.
The Indians previously announced Akron OF TYLER NAQUIN would be in the Arizona Fall League's Surprise Saguaros along with a pair of Carolina Mudcats-- catcher Tony Wolters and infielder Joe Wendle. Saturday, the Indians announced four pitchers who would represent the organization, all of them played for the Aeros this season. LOWERY was also previously named to the Peoria Javelinas roster as a "taxi squad" player.
RHP SHAWN ARMSTRONG spent the majority of the season pitching out of the Aeros bullpen - finished the campaign 2-3 with a 4.09 ERA (15 ER/33.0 IP); this will mark Armstrong's second season participating in the AZL Fall League, having earned AFL "Rising Star" honors in 2012.
RHP TREY HALEY, a 2nd pick of the Tribe in 2008, will also head to the AZL Fall League after enjoying a successful season in Akron; he notched seven saves and enjoyed a stretch of 20.1 innings where he only allowed one earned run from June 21-August 10.
RHP JEFF JOHNSON spent the second "half" of the 2013 campaign with the Aeros where he allowed just six earned runs over 21.2 relief innings, limiting opposing hitters to a .158 average against (12-for-76).
RHP WILL ROBERTS made four starts for the Carolina Mudcats to begin the season before being promoted to Akron where he finished the season 7-9 with a 4.57 ERA (68 ER/134.1 IP).
The Winter League rosters are expected to be announced soon. Play in those leagues start in mid-October.
