I am about to do something that I haven't done in about five or six years. It's something that I have been told not to do. It's something that I needed to ask permission - from two different organizations - to do. But, since it's for charity, I was given the go ahead.
I will be growing a mustache as part of Movember.
What is Movember?
It started as a group of 30 guys in Melbourne, Australia during November of 2003 as a way to raise money for men's health. By 2012, over one million participants took part in the program and raised over $147 million in 21 countries.
Like the man in the photo up top, I am naturally suspicious. But, Movember is rated as one of the Top 100 Non-Governmental Organization in the world. That is out of five million NGOs in the world.
You can read more about Movember's history and its vision, values, and goals at the links provided.
My page is here and I'll be updating there once November 1 gets here.
The other times that I grew a mustache were for the playoffs - once for hockey and once for baseball - and for a long homestand. That long homestand mustache resulted in the ban on my facial hair. At the time I grew it out some people could not look at me and have a serious conversation. (It was the fault of the mustache and I am sticking to that reason).
Now, I just need to pick the type of mustache to grow. I like the Rollie Fingers handlebar and the John Axford gunslinger options. I might try the Pete Vuckovich Fu Manchu. From a non-baseball perspective, the one style that I would love to try, but fear no one would get would be the Peter Watts from Millennium. I'll stay away from it because Terry O'Quinn is the only person who could actually make that work.
I have a few more weeks to decide and a week after that before it starts taking shape. I'll keep you updated on the progress of both the mustache and the donations.
One last note, if there are any other of my brothers in sound out there who wish to participate in this year's Movember, I have set up a team for Minor League Baseball Broadcasters.
Let's do this!
EDIT: In case the link up top isn't working, this should take you to my page.
