Ace dashes in ESPN commerical
01/16/2014 9:14 PM ET

Lake Elsinore, CA -Thanks to an ESPN marketing campaign, Ace, The Fastest Squirrel in the World, is back on the national stage in a dashing part of the "I was on SportsCenter" commercial series.

The nutty and speedy squirrel began his career with the Lake Elsinore Storm in 2012 but gained notoriety after making his Major League debut at Petco Park in San Diego and earning a spot on SportsCenter's Top 10 plays of the day.

On April 27, 2013, as part of an in-game promotion, the Squirrel was invited to compete in a race against a San Diego Padres fan. In the middle of the fourth inning and the Padres trailing 5-0 to the division rival San Francisco Giants, the Squirrel defeated his opponent in a thrilling come-from-behind victory. The Squirrel's first Major League win inspired both the fans and players as the Padres rallied for six runs in the bottom of the fourth en route to a 8-7 extra-inning walk-off win.

Named for his sponsor, The Lake Elsinore Hotel and Casino, "Ace" races fans nightly at The Diamond during the Storm baseball season. Each contestant has a chance to win $500 if they upset the heavily favored rodent in a race across the field.

Before his bushy-tailed adventures began, Eric Theiss, aka The Squirrel, was a track and field National Champion and two-time All-American at DIII SUNY College at Oneonta.

"The Squirrel brings added anticipation and excitement for the fans at every game," said Assistant General Manager Raj Naraynan. "His speed is captivating, and the national coverage has been great for the Storm and squirrels alike."

Be sure to follow the Fastest Squirrel in the World on Facebook and the Storm on Twitter at @Storm_Baseball to be part of the "We're NUTS over the Squirrel" movement.
