Spokane, WA - MLB.com has released the annual Top 100 Prospects, and four former Spokane Indians made the cut on the prestigious list. The four players are Jorge Alfaro (39), CJ Edwards (42), Rougned Odor (59) and Joey Gallo (92).
Alfaro ('11) has quickly become a top-three catching prospect in all of Minor League Baseball. His performance in the Arizona Fall League last season propelled his team, the Surprise Saguaros, to a championship. In the title-clinching win, Alfaro threw out two base runners and also drove in the game-winning RBI.
Edwards ('12) debuts on the list at No. 42, and was the key cog in the package that sent Matt Garza from the Chicago Cubs to the Texas Rangers last season. Now known as the String-Bean Slinger, Edwards dominated the competition last season by leading the Daytona Cubs (Full Season Class A Advanced) to the Florida State League Championship. He tossed 116.1 innings and recorded a phenomenal ERA of 1.86, and struck out 155 batters.
Odor ('11) has made big strides in the past two years since being promoted from Spokane. Odor did a bit of everything, as he split time in Myrtle Beach (A Advanced) and Frisco (Double-A). He hit for an average of .305 with 45 doubles, 11 home runs, 78 RBIs and 32 stolen bases.
Gallo ('12) let every baseball fan know his name last season, as he led all minor leaguers with 40 home runs to win the Joe Bauman Home Run Award. Gallo, who was 19 at the time, became the youngest player to ever win the award. He and another former Indian - Ryan Rua ('12) - helped the Hickory Crawdads (Low A) break the South Atlantic League's club home run record with 175 on the season.
Former No. 1 prospect Jurickson Profar ('10) was the biggest name to graduate from the list. Now that he is on the Rangers roster, he is no longer eligible to be on the list. Martin Perez ('08) also made it out of the Top 100 and onto the Rangers roster.
The Spokane Indians open the 2014 regular season on Friday, June 13th at Avista Stadium against the Eugene Emeralds.
