TROY, NY - The Houston Astros have officially called up outfielder George Springer from Triple-A Oklahoma City, and will be in uniform on Wednesday night in Houston against the Kansas City Royals. Springer, 24, becomes the 30th former member of the Tri-City ValleyCats to reach Major League Baseball.

The Astros first-round MLB Draft selection in 2011 (11th overall), and No. 3 Astros' top prospect as ranked by MLB.com, Springer made his professional debut with the ValleyCats on August 26, 2011 in Lowell. He appeared in eight games for the 'Cats that year, going 5-for-28 with one home run and three RBI.

A native of New Britain, Connecticut, Springer played three seasons with the University of Connecticut, and became the highest drafted Husky in school history after setting career records for runs scored (220) and home runs (46).

Following his brief stint with the ValleyCats in 2011, Springer split the 2012 season between Class A Advanced Lancaster and Double A Corpus Christi. He combined to hit .302 with 21 doubles, 10 triples, 24 home runs, 87 RBI, and 32 stolen bases between the two levels.

In 2013, Springer had one of the greatest seasons in Minor League Baseball history, joining the 30/30 club with 37 home runs and 45 stolen bases combined between Triple A Oklahoma City and Double A Corpus Christi. He was named Minor League Baseball's 2013 Offensive Player of the Year, Astros' Minor League Player of the Year, and was one of just nine position players named to Baseball America's Minor League All-Star Team.

Prior to his call-up, Springer was hitting .353 with three home runs and nine RBI in 13 games at Oklahoma City this season. Springer is arguably one of the highest touted Houston prospects to be called up since another former 'Cat, Hunter Pence made his debut with the Astros on April 28, 2007.
