Fort Wayne, IN- The Peoria Chiefs rallied in the eighth inning but couldn't extend their win streak to six games as the Fort Wayne TinCaps tied the game in the eighth and won 6-5 on a single by Dustin Peterson in the bottom of the ninth. The loss drops the Chiefs to 8-5 on the season with two games left on the roadtrip.
"That was a good game, well played on both sides with some nice defensive plays and clutch hits," said manager Joe Kruzel. "It's a shame to lose that one. Unfortunately they executed better than we did at the end of the game."
The Chiefs jumped on TinCaps starter Pete Kelich from the beginning as C.J. McElroy Jr. led off the game with a triple to right field. McElroy scored the first run of the game as Jimmy Bosco reached on an error by Luis Tejada at first base.
Peoria added on in the third inning as Michael Schulze led off with a single and McElroy beat out a bunt to third base for a single. Bosco singled to load the bases and Schulze scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Carson Kelly for a 2-0 Chiefs lead. With two outs and Mason Katz at the plate, Kelich balked home McElroy for a 3-0 Peoria advantage.
Fort Wayne battled back and took the lead in the bottom of the third against Jimmy Reed. Ronnie Richardson led off with a single and Mallex Smith reached on a swinging bunt to put two on with no outs. Josh VanMeter's second double of the game scored two and after a strikeout the TinCaps tied the game on a double by Fronmil Reyes. Fernando Perez singled to left to score Reyes and put the hosts on top 4-3 before Reed got out of the inning with a flyout and strikeout.
The game stayed 4-3 into the eighth before the Chiefs rallied against Tony Rizzotti. Bosco led off with a double and moved to third on a flyout by Kelly. Ronald Castillo singled home Bosco to tie the game and Kenny Peoples-Walls double to left-center to put the Chiefs on top 5-4.
"We struggled in the middle innings at the plate," said Kruzel "Bosco changed the complexity of the eighth inning by getting to third and Castillo and Kenny had big hits there for us to regain the lead but we just couldn't finish it off."
Joe Scanio started the eighth inning by hitting Reyes and Perez singled to right. A sac bunt moved both TinCaps runners up one base and Franchy Cordero tied the game with a sacrifice fly. The Chiefs put the first two on in the top of the ninth as Cesar Valera and Schulze singled. McElroy fouled off two bunt attempts before hitting into a double play and Valera was left at third as Bosco popped out to second.
Scanio hit Ronnie Richardson to start the ninth and Smith reached when his bunt wasn't handled cleanly at the mound. VanMeter sacrificed and Zach Loraine came in to pitch with the Chiefs bringing Peoples-Walls in from left field to be a fifth infielder. Dustin Peterson ended the game with a line drive down the left-field line as Richardson scored for the 6-5 win.
Reed allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk over five innings while striking out three. Chris Perry threw two hitless and scoreless innings with one walk and four strikeouts. Scanio (1-1) took the loss allowing two runs on two hits and two hit batters over 1 2/3 innings. Loraine allowed a single on the only pitch he threw.
