MOBILE, AL -- The Mobile BayBears won their second game in a row Thursday night, topping the Birmingham Barons 11-7 at Hank Aaron Stadium. The win evens the series between the two teams with the rubber matchup scheduled for 7:05 PM Friday evening. The 11 runs were the most Mobile has scored this season. The breakout performance with the bats was matched on the mound by BayBears RHP Mike Lee who earned his first win of 2014.
Mobile wasted no time, posting four runs in the first inning. Justin Greene reached on a lead-off walk and scored from third on a throwing error to give Mobile a 1-0 advantage. Three batters later with two men on, Jon Griffin connected on a three-run homer to left-center, giving the BayBears a 4-0 lead.
After the Barons cut the lead in half with two runs in the second inning and then pulled with in one run in the top half of the fifth, Mobile again extended the lead to four runs by posting three in the bottom half of the inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Garrett Weber deliver a two-run single and a throwing error allowed another run to cross the plate making it a 7-3 score. Weber would finish the game going 5-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. He is the first BayBear to go 5-for-5 in a game since Javier Brito accomplished the feat on May 18, 2007.
Lee (1-2) earned his first win on the mound, tossing six innings while allowing just three runs on eight hits. LHP Scott Snodgress (0-2) was tabbed with the loss for the Barons. The lefty threw five innings, giving up seven runs (six earned) on six hits en rout to his second loss of the season.
The win now gives each team two victories in the five game series with the series finale Friday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Bryan Woodall will take to the mound as Mobile will attempt to take their third straight series to open the season and win three straight for the first time this year.
