Charleston's Caleb Smith Named SAL Pitcher of the Week
Becomes First RiverDog in 2014 to Take Home League's Pitcher of the Week Award
04/28/2014 2:42 PM ET

CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston RiverDogs pitcher Caleb Smith received the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week Award on Monday for games played April 21-27. Smith made one start on April 24 at the Delmarva Shorebirds and struck out a career-high 13 batters over six shutout innings en route to a victory.

The 13 batters Smith fanned are the most by a RiverDog since the ballclub became a Yankees affiliate in 2005. The lefty allowed only three hits and walked one batter without allowing a run in his best outing since being drafted last June by the Yankees. The six innings is also the most Smith has pitched as a professional.

A native of Houston, Texas, the 22-year-old pitcher was drafted out of Sam Houston State University in the 14th round of the 2013 MLB Amateur draft by the New York Yankees. A 6'2", 175 lb. left-handed pitcher, Smith is now 2-1 with a sparkling 0.89 ERA in four starts as a RiverDog.

The RiverDogs are home starting at 7:05pm on Tuesday, April 29, at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park for a seven game home stand against the Augusta GreenJackets and Delmarva Shorebirds. For tickets and more information visit www.riverdogs.com, call 843-723-7241, or stop by the Riley Park box office.
