Suns split twin bill, series with Crawdads
05/01/2014 10:52 PM ET

HAGERSTOWN, M.D. - The Hagerstown Suns (19-6) walked off with a 4-3 win in game two of a double-header with the Hickory Crawdads (12-13) on Thursday night to salvage the split of the twin bill. Hagerstown is now 3-1 in double-headers this season.

The walk-off win for the Suns came as a result of a throwing error by Hickory 3B Nick Urbanus. With runners at second and third and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Urbanus threw over to first after Suns DH Jame Yezzo sent a ground ball his way. However, instead of turning the final out in the inning and sending the game to extras, Urbanus' throw was low and got away from 1B Ronald Guzman, allowing Suns 2B Wilmer Difo to score to give the Suns the win.

Hickory had tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh thanks to an RBI single by RF Nomar Mazara. Their other two runs scored in the fourth on a two-run homerun by 2B Travis Demeritte. Hagerstown scored a run each in the second, fourth, and fifth. The run in the fifth came off of a solo homerun by 3B Drew Ward.

LHP Justin Thomas (1-2) blew the save yet got the win for Hagerstown. He pitched one inning, allowing one earned run on two hits and two walks. RHP Cody Kendall (1-2) got tagged with the loss for Hickory. He gave up one unearned run on three hits in two innings while striking out two. LHP Hector Silvestre started for the Suns and went 2.2 innings without allowing a run.

In game one of the double-header the Crawdads came away with a 7-3 win. Hickory took control of the game with a four-run second inning and never looked back. The first three runs of the frame scored on a bases-clearing double by DH Evan Van Hoosier. Van Hoosier scored the final run of the inning on a double by 3B Nick Vickerson. All four runs in the inning were unearned.

Starting RHP Austin Voth (0-2) suffered the loss for the Suns. He threw five innings, giving up five runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out five. LHP Ryne Slack (2-0) earned the win for Hickory. He pitched two scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one.

The Suns next begin a four-game series against the Lexington Legends (11-16) on Friday May 2 at Municipal Stadium. Hagerstown will send RHP Jake Johansen (2-0) to the mound for his fifthth start and appearance of the year. He will square off against RHP Jake Junis (1-2) for Lexington. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
