KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (May 2, 2014) - Four Intimidators pitchers combined to strike out a season-high 15 batters but the Kannapolis offense remained quiet most of the night in a 7-2 loss to the Hickory Crawdads on Friday at CMC-NorthEast Stadium in front of 3,635 fans, the largest crowd of the season.
Hickory's Kelvin Vasquez spun 6.0 scoreless innings, giving the Crawdads (13-13) plenty of time to build a lead. Vasquez (1-0) struck out four while allowing three hits and walk to earn the win.
Kannapolis (14-14) starter Andrew Mitchell walked five batters over 2 and 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on four hits. Mitchell (2-1), who suffered his first loss of the season, struck out four batters before leaving the game in the third inning. Jordan Guerrero added five strikeouts over 2 and 2/3 frames on the mound, while relievers Jose Bautista and Matt Abramson combined for six more whiffs over the final 4.0 innings.
Hickory drew consecutive walks to open the game, setting up a Nomar Mazara sac-fly for a 1-0 lead. Ronald Guzman added a two-run double in the third, extending the Crawdads lead, 3-0, and a RBI-single in the fourth, finishing the game 2-for-5 with 3 RBI and a run scored. Travis Demeritte added a two-run home run (5) off Guerrero in the fifth inning, extending the lead to 7-0.
Adam Engel and Trey Michalczewski drove in runs for Kannapolis in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
