Naturals top Cardinals to even the series
05/10/2014 12:24 AM ET

Springdale, AR - One night after getting blown out, the Northwest Arkansas Naturals rebounded with a 9-1 win against the Springfield Cardinals before 8,053 fans at Arvest Ballpark on Friday night.

After the Naturals (12-22) plated an unearned run in the bottom of the first against RHP Sam Gaviglio (L, 1-5), the Cardinals (17-17) came right back in the top of the second. Facing LHP Sam Selman (W, 2-2), C Cody Stanley launched a solo home run to right field, squaring the score at 1-1.

However, Northwest Arkansas responded with another unearned run in the third, before stretching the lead with two in the bottom of the fifth. Gaviglio retired the first two batters in the fifth, but the Naturals dug in with four straight two-out singles, including RBIs for DH Mark Threlkeld and 1B Juan Graterol, to make it 4-1.

RHP Logan Billbrough took over in the fifth to record the final out in that frame, but the Naturals then got back on the attack in the sixth. Northwest Arkansas orchestrated a five-run rally on six singles, including a two-run base hit by RF Jorge Bonifacio, that increased the lead to 9-1.

Naturals RHP Angel Baez and RHP Andrew Triggs both dealt a pair of scoreless relief innings to close the 9-1 win for Northwest Arkansas.
