Delmarva's Harvey fans career-high 10

No. 4 Baltimore prospect holds Lakewood to one hit in seven frames
May 12, 2014

Hunter Harvey leads the South Atlantic League with 45 strikeouts. The Orioles' No. 4 prospect  didn't allow an earned run in five of his seven starts this season and has held his Class A foes to a .147 average. But the only numbers that matter to him are the ones in his team's record.

After not earning a win since his first start of 2014, Harvey tossed seven one-hit innings and struck out a career-high 10 as Delmarva shut out Lakewood, 3-0, on Monday.

"I felt pretty good. I had good command tonight, I was working in and out of the zone," he said. "They really helped me out early in the count, swinging early. They got some groundouts and some popouts early.

"I didn't want to give up any runs because we were tied most of the game, and then we took the lead, so I just wanted to keep our lead."

The only two blemishes on the 19-year-old's day were a leadoff walk to J.P. Crawford in the first and Samuel Hiciano's double in the second. After that, he retired the next 16 batters he faced.

"The first batter, I didn't really have my focus," lst year's 22nd overall pick said. "[Then] I just focused more, wasn't trying to aim it and just threw the ball."

Prior to Monday, Harvey's career high was eight strikeouts, recorded in a three-inning start for Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Orioles last season.

With all three of his pitches working against the BlueClaws, the right-hander pitched efficiently, only needing 83 pitches in front of a crowd that included family and friends. Harvey (2-2) jumped to the head of the circuit in whiffs.

"That's really just a number," he said. "I just throw my game and help my team win."

Mike Yastrzemski got the Shorebirds on the board in the fifth with a single that plated Gregory Lorenzo. Then Trey Mancini and Josh Hart -- the O's No. 6 prospect -- added a couple insurance runs with RBI singles in the seventh.

Crawford, the No. 3 Phillies prospect, also doubled off reliever Jimmy Yacabonis. The shortstop leads Lakewood with 20 walks this season.

BlueClaws starter Drew Anderson (1-3) yielded a run on four hits while striking out six over six frames.
