The Birmingham Barons and Chicago White Sox announced Tuesday that INF Micah Johnson has been promoted to Class AAA Charlotte.
Johnson, 23, is in his third professional season after being drafted by the White Sox in the 9th round of the June 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Indiana University.
He joined the Barons near the end of the 2013 regular season, hitting .238 (5-for-21) with two runs scored and an RBI in five games. In 131 games between Class A Kannapolis, Class A Winston-Salem and Birmingham last season, Johnson hit .312 (167-for-536) while leading all of Minor League Baseball in steals (84) and ranking among the MilB leaders in triples (4th, 15) and runs scored (T-4th, 106).
However, it was in the playoffs that Johnson truly shined, hitting .368 (14-for-38) with a home run, 12 runs scored, seven RBI and seven steals. He was named Finals MVP after hitting .450 (9-for-20) with a key solo home run in the decisive fifth game against Mobile.
In 37 games this season, Johnson is hitting .329 (48-for-146) with three home runs, 18 runs scored, 16 RBI and 10 steals. He leads the Southern League in batting average (1st), games, (T-1st), at-bats (1st), hits (48) and ranks among the league-leaders in total bases (3rd, 68) and on-base percentage (5th, .414).
