05/14/2014 10:11 PM ET

Allentown, Pa. - Joel De La Cruz twirled a career-best seven innings and Zelous Wheeler added three hits, but a miscue by De La Cruz in the second led to an unearned run that proved to be the difference for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) in a 3-2 loss to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Philadelphia Phillies) Wednesday night at CoCa-Cola Park. The loss is the third for SWB in its last four games and moves the RailRiders to 1-5 against the 'Pigs this season.

SWB jumped out to an early advantage, plating a run on a pair of hits in the visiting second. Adonis Garcia tripled on a ball to right and scored on a base knock by Zelous Wheeler for the early 1-0 lead.

The RailRiders plated their second run in the third. Jose Pirela led the frame off with a walk and advanced to third after consecutive singles by Austin Romine and Antoan Richardson loaded the bases. Scott Sizemore brought around the RailRiders second run on a sacrifice fly, his third of the year. After successive outs the RailRiders stranded a runner in route to the 2-0 lead.

Lehigh Valley evened the tilt with two runs of its own in the home third. Steve Susdorf doubled and took third on a miscue by RailRiders starter Joel De La Cruz, the error allowed Leandro Castro to advance to second giving the 'Pigs runners at second and third with nobody out. Ronny Cedeno and Tyson Gillies followed with run scoring hits that plated both Susdorf and Castro to tie the game at 2-2.

The IronPigs added the go-ahead tally in the fourth on a sacrifice fly. Koyie Hill doubled to left and moved to third on a ground ball to right side. Susdorf brought the lead run home on a sacrifice fly to left that pushed the lead to 3-2.

SWB mounted a comeback in the ninth as Wheeler reached on a two-out base hit and went first-to-third on the successive single by Russ Canzler. With runners at the corners Pirela grounded out to effectively end the ballgame, giving the IronPigs the 3-2 win.

De La Cruz (1-1) was tagged with his first career Triple-A loss, tossing a career-best seven innings, yielding three runs. Greg Smith (4-0) earned the win, twirling 6.2 innings and scattering seven hits while Justin De Fratus (3), despite allowing two base hits in ninth, was awarded the save.
