LumberKings shutout Snappers 5-0

Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings picked up their third shutout of the season with a 5-0 win over the Beloit Snappers. The victory snapped a three game losing streak for the LumberKings (22-19) and a six game winning streak for the Snappers (19-23). Clinton had just twelve hits combined in the first three games, but picked up nine in the series finale victory.

Both starting pitchers, Carlos Misell for the LumberKings, and Bobby Wahl for the Snappers were sensational through the first three innings. Misell (W, 5-2) allowed only three baserunners over the first third of the game, and Wahl (L, 0-3) was perfect. Wahl broke first. After a two-out single by Jack Reinheimer in the third that snapped 3.2 innings of perfect ball, Wahl surrendered a towering home run to Austin Wilson that made it 2-0. Wahl left the game after the Wilson home run on the hook for the loss.

Clinton struck for two more in the sixth off of right-handed reliever Junior Mendez. After one out singles by Corey Simpson and Jack Reinheimer, Clinton executed a double steal that saw Reinheimer take second and Simpson score from third on the throw from catcher Jose Chavez. After Mendez retired Wilson, Justin Seager singled to Snappers third baseman B.A. Vollmuth, as Reinheimer scored from third. The RBI single made it 4-0 Clinton.

Misell remained in the game through the seventh inning, as he matched Lars Huijer's seven-shutout inning performance in the opener of the homestand with his own in the finale. Misell struck out five and walked only one, as he picked up his team high fifth win of the season. It was Misell's first quality start of 2014, and the fifth for the LumberKings, as Lars Huijer and Eddie Campbell each have two.

Thyago Vieira pitched a scoreless eighth inning before Clinton added on one more in the bottom of the frame on three singles. Seager drove home Reinheimer to cap off the scoring with an RBI base hit. Vieira put the first two men on in the ninth, a walk to Melvin Mercedes and a single for Jaycob Brugman, but got the next three in order to close out the game.

The LumberKings surpassed their total in runs from the first three games (three) in the series finale (four). Jack Reinheimer extended his season high hit streak to nine. He has hit .405 (15-37) with five RBI's eight runs scored over the nine game streak. Carlos Misell equaled the season high in innings for a LumberKings starter with seven. Four LumberKings had a multi-hit game, after combining for zero multi-hit games over the first three games of the series. Clinton went 6-4 on the homestand and remains in third place in the Western division.

The LumberKings are back at it on Monday night in Peoria, as Clinton begins a four game series with the Chiefs at Dozer Park. Jose Flores, Lars Huijer, and Edwin Diaz are scheduled to start for the LumberKings in the series. Flores is set to match up with righty Al Reyes in the series opener. First pitch between the LumberKings and Chiefs is scheduled for 6:30 CT.
