FREDERICK, MD -The Frederick Keys are pleased to announce that Parker Bridwell has been named the Carolina League "Pitcher of the Week" for the week of May 12-18. It is the second time that the right-hander has earned a pitcher of the week honor, garnering recognition last August when he was pitching for the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds. Additionally, Bridwell becomes the first Key to be named pitcher of the week since Tyler Wilson won the award in September 2012.
Bridwell receives the honor after coming within two outs of his first professional no-hitter last Tuesday, May 13. Facing the Potomac Nationals, the right-hander retired Cole Leonida to open the ninth, before Tony Renda singled to centerfield two batters later. Exiting after 98 pitches, Bridwell established a new career-high for innings pitched, while his 8.1 frames represent the longest outing by a Frederick pitcher in 2014. The 22-year-old also finished with a season-high eight strikeouts.
The No. 19 prospect in the Orioles system according to Baseball America, Bridwell spent all of 2013 with Low-A Delmarva. With the Shorebirds, he went 8-9 with a 4.73 ERA over 26 games. Selected by the Orioles in the ninth round of the 2010 draft out of Hereford High School (TX), the Texan went 7-2 on the mound as a senior with a 2.26 ERA. Over 65 innings, he struck out 106. A three-sport star, Bridwell also threw for 2,669 yards as a quarterback to go along with 24 touchdowns, and averaged 12 points and six rebounds as a forward on the basketball team.
The Keys receive an off-day on Monday before beginning a three-game series with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Tuesday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Bridwell (1-5, 5.61) takes the mound for the Keys and will be countered by right-hander Alex "Chi Chi" Gonzalez (4-2, 2.42). First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m. and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source. For ticket information, call 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
