Ortiz and Bleich Win Weekly Awards

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of May 19th through May 25th.

New Britain Rock Cats outfielder Daniel Ortiz has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of May 19th-May 25th. The 24-year old hit .480 (12-for-25) with four doubles, one triple, two home runs, six RBI, six runs scored and a .960 slugging percentage in six games for the Rock Cats last week. Ortiz, who is a native of Caguas, Puerto Rico, had at least one hit in all six games he played in last week for the Rock Cats and had multiple hits in four of those games, including posting back-to-back three-hit performances last Tuesday and Wednesday against the visiting Richmond Flying Squirrels. The 5'11", 175 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in slugging percentage (.960) and OPS (1.460) last week and tied for the weekly league lead in extra-base hits (7). He also ranked among the weekly leaders in total bases (24-2nd), doubles (4-tied 2nd), batting average (.480-3rd), hits (12-3rd), triples (1-tied 3rd), home runs (2-tied 6th), on-base percentage (.500-tied 6th), runs scored (6-tied 7th) and RBI (6-tied 10th). Daniel, who is hitting .296 with 13 doubles, four home runs and 25 RBI in 42 games for the Rock Cats this season, was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the fourth round of the 2008 draft out of Benjamin Harrison High School in Caguas, Puerto Rico.

Jeremy Bleich, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Trenton Thunder, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 19th-May 25th. The 6'2", 200 lb. hurler started one game for the Thunder last week and had a record of 1-0 with 10 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Bleich, who is a native of Metairie, Louisiana, made his lone appearance of the week on Friday night at Richmond and threw seven shutout innings in a 6-1 victory by the Thunder. He gave up just four hits while striking out a career-high 10 batters and walking two while matching his career-high for innings pitched. The 24-year old tied for the league lead last week with a 0.00 ERA and also finished ranked among the weekly league leaders in wins (1-tied 2nd), strikeouts (10-tied 5th) and batting average against (.154-tied 8th). In 10 starts for the Thunder this season Bleich has a record of 4-4 with a 3.47 ERA. He currently ranks sixth in the league in strikeouts (49), eighth in WHIP (1.16) and ninth in batting average against (.229) and is tied for seventh in wins. Jeremy was selected by the New York Yankees in the first round with the 44th overall pick of the 2008 draft after putting together a record of 3-3 with a 2.09 ERA in 11 games, nine starts, during his junior season at Stanford University.
