Greenville, SC - Wednesday night at Fluor Field brought 7,176 fans to the game, setting a new attendance record for a Greenville Drive game. The game itself wasn't as successful for the Drive (29-29), as they dropped the series finale to the Lexington Legends (25-34) 9-3.
The previous attendance record for a Drive game at Fluor Field was 7,129, set on May 31, 2009 when John Smoltz made a rehab appearance for the Drive. The record attendance for any game at Fluor Field was set on March 1st, when 7,182 fans were present for the Reedy River Rivalry matchup between South Carolina and Clemson.
The game was all Lexington, as they struck first in the third inning and never looked back. Mauricio Ramos hit a one-out double to left, moved to third on a flyout and scored on Fred Ford's RBI single.
The Legends would strike for four more runs against Drive starter Jamie Callahan (3-5). Luis Villegas doubled in the fourth and scored on Alfredo Escalera's single. They added three runs in the fifth thanks to a Drive error and RBI singles by Carlos Garcia and Dex Kjerstad.
Those runs were more than enough support for Jake Junis (6-3), who hurled seven outstanding innings for the Legends. He gave up five hits and one run while walking three and striking out four.
The Drive struck for their lone run against Junis in the fifth on a double play groundout after back-to-back singles by Jordan Weems and Carlos Coste. They added a pair of runs in the eighth on an RBI double by Carlos Asuaje and an RBI single by Kendrick Perkins.
Lexington scored four times in the top of the ninth to add to their lead, with the highlight being Garcia's two-run homer to right. He led their offense with a 3-5 night and three RBI. Ford, Dominique Taylor and Ramon Torres added two hits apiece.
Weems collected three hits to pace the Drive, and Perkins chipped in with two hits.
The Drive begin a four-game road series against the Rome Braves on Thursday night at 7:00. RH Teddy Stankiewicz (4-3, 3.71) will take the mound for the Drive, and RH Tyler Brosius (0-3, 5.06) will start for the Braves.
