(Tyler Olson tossed a season-high 8 innings and earned win)

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. (JUNE 5, 2014) - Tyler Olson (2-2, 4.46) could not achieve his second career complete game, but he did pitch eight strong innings as the Generals (26-34) defeated the Birmingham Barons (26-35) 4-3 at Regions Park Thursday. The win is Jackson's fourth in their last five games.

Ketel Marte (2x5, R, 2B) earned his 18th multi-hit night and Kevin Rivers (3x4, R, 2B) had his first three-hit game of the season to lead the Jackson offense.

The Generals picked up the early lead in the first. With one out, Marte executed a bunt single and Patrick Kivlehan (1x3, BB) singled him to third. Marte scored the game's first run on a Mickey Wiswall (1x4, RBI) ground out and it was 1-0 Jackson.

Birmingham tied the game in the third after earning the dreaded lead-off walk. Jeremy Ferrell walked and was sacrificed to second by Daniel Wagner. After a strikeout Chris Curley brought Wagner home with a single and the game was tied 1-1.

There was no more scoring until the ninth inning. With one out the Generals received back-to-singles from Mike Dowd (1x4) and Rivers. John Hicks (R) came in to run for Dowd and scored on Leon Landry's (1x4, R, RBI, 2B) eighth double of the season. Jamal Austin (1x5, 2 RBI) then hit a two RBI single that scored Rivers and Landry and made the score 4-1 heading to the bottom of the ninth.

Curley singled to lead off the bottom half for the Barons and Michael Earley doubled him home to cut the lead to 4-2. Then Earley scored on Rangel Ravelo's single and the score was 4-3 Jackson. But Mayckol Guaipe (1-1, 3 SV, 1.87) was able to get the final three outs with no more damage, and the Generals earned the win.

But the story was really Olson's pitching. He earned his second win on the year with an impressive 8.0 innings of work. He started the ninth, but could not finish and gave way to Guaipe. Olson only gave up three runs on five hits and struck out four Barons.

Guaipe came in and picked up his third save on the season, pitching an inning where he gave up two of Olson's runs, but ultimately struck out one and got another ground out to preserve the win.

Cody Winiarski (0-2, 4.08) picked up the loss for Birmingham as he gave up the three ninth inning runs.

The Generals and Barons square off again Friday in Birmingham. Jackson will have Matt Anderson (1-2, 6.66) on the bump as Chris Beck (3-6, 3.72) will make the start for Birmingham. The game will be at 7:05 pm and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
