Ports Stay Perfect Versus Mavs In 5-1 Win
06/07/2014 10:23 PM ET

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports won their fifth straight game versus the High Desert Mavericks on Saturday night at Banner Island Ballpark. The Mavericks scored their first and only run on the second pitch of the ballgame, but the Ports scored the final five runs of the contest in a 5-1 victory.

Ports starter Seth Streich (7-4) gave up a home run to High Desert's Travis Witherspoon on the second pitch of the game that gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. Streich, however, would not allow another run in his outing and the Mavericks failed to score another run in the contest. High Desert had a runner thrown out at home plate to end the third inning and that was as close as they came to scoring again as Streich tossed a season-high 6.2 innings and earned the win, allowing one run on five hits while striking out seven.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, the Ports fired back with three runs. With the bases loaded and two out, Bruce Maxwell hit a two-run single up the middle to give the Ports a 2-1 lead. With Renato Nunez at second and Maxwell at first, Nunez attempted to steal third base as Dusty Robinson was at bat. The throw from Mavericks catcher Steve Baron was errant and sailed into left field, allowing Nunez to score and make it 3-1.

Mavericks starter Tyler Pike (2-4) kept the Ports out of the run column innings two through four, but in the fifth Pike hit Daniel Robertson to open the frame. Two batters later, Matt Olson doubled to put runners at second and third and Ryon Healy followed with a sacrifice fly to left to make it 4-1. It was the final run allowed by Pike who suffered the loss after going five innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits.

Jordan Shipers came on in relief to pitch the sixth and kept Ports off the board in the sixth and seventh innings. In the eighth, however, Ryan Gorton doubled to open the frame and Robinson and Wade Kirkland followed with back-to-back singles with Kirkland's scoring Gorton to make it 5-1. Shipers allowed one run on five hits over two-plus innings of work.

Michael Ynoa came on in relief of Streich with two outs in the seventh and retired all four batters he faced. Nolan Sanburn entered the game to pitch the ninth inning and after allowing a leadoff single, struck out the next three batters in a row to close out the contest.

The Ports and Mavericks play the third game of their four-game set on Sunday afternoon at Banner Island Ballpark. Left-hander Chris Lamb (2-0, 4.95 ERA) will make the start for Stockton, opposed by High Desert right-hander Min-Sih Chen (2-4, 7.02 ERA). First pitch is set for 2:09 p.m. PDT.
