JACKSON, TENN. (JUNE 11, 2014) - Tyler Olson (3-2, 3.80), Richard Vargas (0-1, 5.46) and Mayckol Guaipe (1-1, 1.80) combined for a six-hit shutout Wednesday night guiding the Generals (29-36) to a 4-0 over the Jacksonville Suns (34-32). Olson went 7.0 shutout innings in his eighth Double-A start for the Generals. It was the fifth shutout posted this season by Jackson which has won seven of their last 11 games. The Generals take a 1-0 series lead after the first of the five-game homestand with Jacksonville.
It took the Generals until the fourth inning to crack Jose Urena (6-4, 4.07) as Jamal Austin (1x3) broke up the Suns starter's perfect game bid with one out single in the fourth. An inning later Jackson tallied their first two runs on Dario Pizzano's (1x4, R, 3 RBI, HR) fourth Jackson home run of the season. It was his second two-run homer of the season and all four of Pizzano's long balls have plated more than one run.
That's all the help Olson needed as he went toe-to-toe with Southern League All-Star Jose Urena. Richard Vargas (0-1, 5.46) and Mayckol Guaipe (1-1, 1.80) came out of the bullpen to pitch a scoreless eighth and ninth respectively to finish off the shutout.
Jackson did add two more insurance runs for Guaipe in the eighth. Leon Landry (2x3, R) led off with a single and scored on a fielder's choice. Ketel Marte (1x3, R) reached on an error and scored on a Pizzano groundout to make the final score 4-0.
Urena pitched well for the Suns, but suffered his fourth loss on the season. He had a perfect game going through 3.1 innings until Austin broke it up with his fourth inning single. Urena also worked out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth inducing a double-play from Patrick Kivlehan (1x4, R, RBI).
Landry was the only General with a multi-hit game, but eight of the nine batters reached base including Ji-Man Choi (0x2, 2 BB) who was intentionally walked twice. Austin extended his hitting streak to a season-high 11 games as Marder improved his to eight games. Kivlehan improved his hitting streak to eight games as well and his on-base streak to 20, just one behind John Hicks team-high 21 games.
The Generals and Suns will play game two of this five-game set Thursday. Matt Anderson (1-2, 5.83) will get the start for the Generals as the Suns will send Chipper Smith (2-1, 1.84) to the mound. Thursday is Dollar Night, presented by MobileNation. The game will be at 7:05 pm and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
