Correa injures right leg in JetHawks' loss

Carlos Correa, MLB.com's No. 7 overall prospect, suffered a right leg injury and was carried off the field, then carted from the dugout to the clubhouse with a towel over his face on Saturday night.

Correa was replaced by a pinch-runner after oversliding third base on an RBI triple in the sixth inning of Class A Advanced Lancaster's 7-5 loss at Lake Elsinore. JetHawks broadcaster Jason Schwartz said he could not confirm a report that Correa's ankle was not broken.

After the game, however, the Antelope Valley Press reported that Correa may have broken his right fibula.

The triple, Correa's sixth of the season, plated Astros No. 12 prospect Teoscar Hernandez with the game's first run. The 19-year-old shortstop was in obvious pain and reportedly unable to put weight on his right leg.

Shortly thereafter, Correa was carted from the dugout to beyond the left-field fence at The Diamond, apparently to be taken for X-rays. Schwartz indicated that Correa looked "very upset."

Correa is hitting .325 with six homers, 16 doubles, 57 RBIs, 20 stolen bases and a .926 OPS. JetHawks manager Rodney Linares has said that the Puerto Rico native is Major League-ready when it comes to defense.

"He could play shortstop in the big leagues. He's as good a defender as I've seen," Linares said. "I told somebody in our front office, he makes plays that I can't explain on the reports. It's so tough to explain these plays because they're unbelievable."

Selected first overall in the 2012 Draft, Correa came off the bench in the California/Carolina League All-Star Game earlier this week and went 0-for-2. He was a Midwest League midseason and postseason All-Star last year, hitting .320 with nine homers, 86 RBIs, 73 runs scored and 10 steals for Class A Quad Cities.

Correa is the latest top 25 prospect to suffer a potentially serious injury. Twins third baseman Miguel Sano and Pirates right-hander Jameson Taillon underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery, while Twins outfielder Byron Buxton, A's shortstop Addison Russell and pitchers Archie Bradley (D-backs), Taijuan Walker (Mariners), Mark Appel (Astros), Dylan Bundy (Orioles) and Kyle Zimmer (Royals) have missed lengthy stretches.
