Peterson & Unsworth earn CAL League Players of the Week

June 23, 2014

Every week two players from the California League, a pitcher and an offensive player, are nominated for the player of the week. However, rarely are the both players from the same team.

For the first week of the second half, June 16-22, High Desert Mavericks' Dylan Unsworth and D.J. Peterson were both nominated as players of the week.

Unsworth, a 21-year-old pitcher from South Africa, dominated the mound in his start against the Modesto Nuts. He posted a career high 12 strikeouts in seven innings and allowed only 3 hits without a walk or a run.

From May 26 to the All-Star break, Peterson's average climbed from .275 to .315. After the break, he continued to terrorize pitchers at the plate and improved his average to .327. In Modesto, Peterson went 8-for-15 in four games, with 4 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI, walked 4 times and scored on 3 occasions.

The Mavericks return home Monday for a seven-game-home stand with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and the Modesto Nuts.
