Peoria, IL - The Clinton LumberKings' wait for a series win was extended Thursday night at Dozer Park in Peoria. The LumberKings (7-12, 37-50) quest at ending a five-week series-winning drought never blossomed as they trailed from start to finish in a 5-3 loss to the Peoria Chiefs (13-7, 50-39).
Blake Holovach (4-3), making his second start of the season for Clinton, gave up one run on two soft singles to right in the first. The latter of the two by Ronald Castillo scored Juan Herrera from third.
In the second, Peoria doubled their lead, thanks to Luis Perez's solo blast to left - his first home run of the season.
Down 2-0, Clinton got one run back in the third inning off of Chase Brookshire (3-4). Three singles by Lonnie Kauppila, Aaron Barbosa, and Chantz Mack resulted in the lone run.
Peoria took advantage of Clinton's only error in the fourth inning. Reinheimer's high throw to first allowed Ronald Castillo to reach safely, and two singles and one two-RBI double later, the two-bagger by Rafael Medina, gave the Chiefs a four-run lead, 5-1.
Clinton got a two-out, two-run double of their own in the sixth inning when Martin Peguero plated Chantz Mack and Marcus Littlewood whose slide at the plate was ahead of the Chiefs' relay.
Brookshire left prior to that, recording the first out in the sixth inning. He picked up his third win of the season after allowing just two runs - one earned - on five hits and one walk. Three right-handers recorded the final 11 outs for Peoria, led by Zach Loraine who retired all seven batters he faced.
The LumberKings did knock two singles in the ninth, but Aaron Barbosa grounded out to second, giving Clinton another tight loss.
Of Clinton's last nine games, eight have been decided by two runs or fewer. The L'Kings are just 3-5 in those contests.
Holovach delivered another quality start, despite allowing a season-high nine hits. He allowed five runs with only three being earned.
Lonnie Kauppila recorded three hits in four at-bats, and Peguero extended his hitting streak to six games going 2-for-4.
