LumberKings take series finale, snap skid
Offensive firepower pushes Clinton to 8-5 win over Cedar Rapids
07/14/2014 11:33 PM ET

Clinton, IA - After consecutive rain shortened ballgames at Ashford University Field, the rain finally held off Monday night. The lack of poor weather seemed to be what the Clinton LumberKings (8-16, 38-54) needed, as they snapped a five game losing streak with a win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels (11-13, 42-52).

Carlos Misell (8-8), who allowed eight runs in his last outing vs. Cedar Rapids, started off his latest start with much of the same. The righty surrendered a two-run home run to Mitch Garver, his eighth of the season, in the first. The home run was the fourth he has allowed in his past two starts vs. the Kernels.

Cedar Rapids starter Ryan Eades (5-10) struggled for the third consecutive start vs. Clinton, as he allowed seven runs and seven hits over just four innings. He picked up his league leading 10th loss of the season, and second vs. the LumberKings.

The LumberKings entered Monday's matchup averaging less than three runs per game in July, but surpassed that in just the second inning. Eades hit Justin Seager on an 0-2 fastball, and he scored on Christian Carmichael's RBI double. Brett Thomas followed with a sacrifice fly, his first RBI of the season. Jeff Zimmerman capped off the inning and put the LumberKings ahead 3-2 with his fourth home run of the year, a solo HR over the wall in left-center field.

The Kernels quickly jumped back in the game with a run in the third. Ryan Walker led off the inning with a double, went to third on Logan Wade's groundout, and scored on Chad Christensen's RBI groundout.

The tie game was short-lived however, as the LumberKings struck for three more off of Eades in the fourth. With one run home on Luis Caballero's sacrifice fly, one of two on the night for the infielder, Aaron Barbosa tripled home Martin Peguero, his second triple of the season. Lonnie Kauppila drove in Barbosa with his ninth double of the year, as the LumberKings led 7-3 after four innings.

Misell left after five innings, as Aaron Brooks pitched the sixth and into the seventh. After the righty struck out Jason Kanzler to begin the seventh, he walked both J.D. Williams and Michael Quesada, before Tanner Vavra reached on an infield single. Brooks got Walker to fly out to Chantz Mack in shallow left field, but Logan Wade followed with a two RBI single that cut the lead to 8-5, the eventual final.

Emilio Pagan pitched a perfect ninth inning, as he picked up his first save since June 10th, and 10th of the season. Eight runs for the LumberKings is the most since they scored 12 in a win at home vs. Quad Cities on June 26th. Kauppila had three hits for the third time in his past four starts, and is 23 for his last 51 (.451). The win was the first in seven attempts vs. Cedar Rapids at home for the LumberKings, and Clinton is now 4-11 vs. the Kernels.

The LumberKings have Tuesday off, as they begin a six game road trip vs. the eastern division. The first of three vs. Great Lakes gets underway Wednesday night at 6:05, before Clinton heads to Lansing for three Saturday through Monday.
