Lawrenceville, Ga. - The Rob Segedin show began Monday with a run-scoring sacrifice fly and continued Tuesday night at Coolray Field in suburban Atlanta as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders' (Triple-A/New York Yankees) recently received infielder collected a career-high five RBI and blasted his first-career grand slam in a 7-0 route of the Gwinnett Braves (Atlanta Braves).
Gwinette's Aaron Northcraft and SWB's Bryan Mitchell dueled to a scoreless tie through the first three frames, with Mitchell striking out four G-Braves along the way. A walk to John Ryan Murphy gave the RailRiders a runner in the fourth before Segedin collected his first Triple-A hit and RBI with a swing a of the bat, a base hit left field that plated Murphy from second for the lead, 1-0.
A pair of miscues by the Braves helped hang a crooked number in the visiting sixth. A pair of errors by shortstop Ozzie Martinez and third baseman Joe Leonard loaded the bases, before Segidin capped the frame with a his first home run as a RailRider, a grand slam to left field that cleared the bases and gave the RailRiders the comfortable 5-0 lead.
The RailRiders tacked on a few more insurance run from there, as a double by Adonis Garcia and back-to-back walks by Kyle Roller and Murphy loaded the bases before Austin Romine plated two runs with a base hit up the middle.
Bryan Mitchell (1-1) spun five scoreless innings and combined with two other RailRiders' relievers in the win, while Northcraft (0-3) scattered six hits and was tagged for three runs in the loss.
The RailRiders and continue the four-game series with the Braves Wednesday, July 22 with the third game of the series scheduled for a 6:35 p.m. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre will toss right-hander Kris Leroux (2-2, 5.08) while the Braves counter with the righty Kanekoa Texeira (1-2, 3.94). OFF THE RAILS
The RailRiders recorded their eighth shutout win of 2014 and second of the eight-game road trip. The shutout win coincided with the RailRiders current 15 inning scoreless streak. The RailRiders have not allowed the G-Braves to plate a run since Joey Terdoslavich's solo home run in the home second on July 21.
Bryan Mitchell recorded his first career win above the Double-A level. The decision came in his third start with SWB.
Catcher John Ryan Murphy continues to heat up, going 1-for-2 with three walks in Tuesday's 7-0 win. The base hit extended Murphy's current hitting streak to a season-high four games. During the four-game run Murphy's average has risen nearly 31 points from .200 on July 18 to .231 on July 22.
Prior to today's contest against Gwinnett the New York Yankees announced the trade of ING Yangervis Solarte and RHP Rafael De Paula to the San Diego Padres in exchange for INF Chase Headley and cash considerations. Solarte appeared in five games for SWB this season from July 5-9, going 12-for-20 with four extra-base hits and five RBI.
