ROUND ROCK, Tex. - Jermaine Curtis hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the seventh inning to give the Memphis Redbirds a come-from-behind 7-6 win and doubleheader sweep of the Round Rock Express on Sunday at the Dell Diamond.
The sweep moves Memphis to a league-best 11-2 in doubleheader action and 60-55 on the season, 1.5 games behind division-leading Nashville.
Second baseman Greg Garcia went 3-for-4 with a homer and three runs batted in.
Memphis sent nine to the dish and jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the opening frame. Ed Easley brought home the first two runs with a two-run double with the bases juiced, followed by a two-run single by Garcia.
Round Rock got a run back in the third inning and tacked on four more in the fourth for a 5-4 lead. After starter Boone Whiting was removed with two men on base, the Express attacked reliever Angel Castro for four runs. Round Rock got their first run of the frame on a Luis Sardinas RBI single up the middle, followed by a go-ahead Michael Choice three-run homer to left.
Garcia led off the sixth inning with his eighth homer of the season, a game-tying solo shot to center off new reliever off Corey Knebel. The Redbirds later went ahead at 6-5 in the frame on a Grichuk RBI single up the middle to score Curtis.
The Express knotted the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth on Jared Hoying's team-leading 19th homer of the season, a towering blast down the right field line.
Whiting was charged with three runs on six hits with four strikeouts in three plus innings for a no-decision. Eric Fornataro (3-3) came away with the blown save and win, giving up one run in two innings.
Memphis and Round Rock will play the second of back-to-back doubleheaders on Monday from the Dell Diamond. Right-hander Carlos Martinez (NR) will make his season debut in the opener against Texas Rangers rehabber Derek Holland at 5:00pm. Left-hander Nick Greenwood (4-3, 2.70) will start the twinbill finale against Edwar Cabrera (1-1, 5.40).
