Boise pitching enchanted by Volcanoes two out magic

All 4 Salem-Keizer runs score with two outs in 4-3 victory
August 9, 2014

KEIZER, Ore. - Salem-Keizer jumped out of the gates early and did not look back, as the Volcanoes maintained the lead throughout the night in a 4-3 win over the Boise Hawks on Friday night at Volcanoes Stadium.

The Volcanoes picked up right where they left off the night before, scoring a couple runs with two outs in the first inning. Christian Arroyo got it started with a line drive up the middle, and after a Skyler Ewing walk, Ryder Jones knocked in Arroyo with a two-out base hit to right field. Up next was Aramis Garcia, who made the score 2-0 with a single to left.

Scoring fell silent after the two-run first inning. No runs were scored until the bottom of the fourth, when the Volcanoes once again shined with two outs recorded. With Hunter Cole reaching on a walk, Johneshwy Fargas came to the plate with two outs and reached on an infield single. The hit paved way for Seth Harrison who cleared the bases with a two-run double roped down the left field line.

Meanwhile, Salem-Keizer starter Jose Reyes was brilliant into the sixth. After allowing a one-out single to Jesse Hodges in the second inning, Reyes retired 12 Hawks in a row before allowing a sixth-inning single to Bryant Flete. Rashad Crawford took advantage of the rare opportunity to bat with a runner on and doubled down the left field line, moving Flete to third with only one out. This set the table for Mark Zagunis, who knocked in Boise's first run of the night with a chopper to third.

Reyes was sent back to the mound to try to pitch the top of the seventh, but he was unable to make it through. David Bote golfed a double into left field to start the frame and Justin Marra followed with a single to right. With runners on the corners and nobody out, a soft grounder back to Reyes allowed Boise's second run to score. With the score 4-2, Volcanoes manager Gary Davenport passed the torch to the lefty Steven Neff.

Neff stranded the inherited runner at third with a ground out and a strikeout. As fans stood for the seventh inning stretch in Salem-Keizer, the Volcanoes boasted a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the ninth, Volcanoes fans had to hold their collective breath as Eury Sanchez allowed back-to-back one-out doubles to Marra and Hodges to trim the lead to just one run. However, a spectacular sliding catch in foul territory from the third baseman Jones recorded the second out, and Charlie White grounded to T Relaford to end the game.

Fargas and Harrison both finished the evening with two hits, including a double each.

Jose Reyes got the win for the Volcanoes after pitching 6.1 innings.
