Early Runs Derail Thunder in 6-4 Loss

The Bowie Baysox jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and held on late to defeat the Thunder 6-4 on Saturday night at ARM & HAMMER Park. In front of 5,810 fans, the Thunder dropped to 1-7 against Bowie this season.

With one out in the top of the first, Bowie had six straight batters reach and sent nine to the plate in the inning. David Adams' base hit to left scored the game's first run and Chris Marrero doubled home two more. After a walk, Garabez Rosa doubled home another and Glynn Davis lifted a sacrifice fly to center to take the 5-0 lead.

Mike Yastrzemski hit his third home run of the season in the top of the second to take the 6-0 advantage.

The Thunder scratched out their only run against Baysox starter Zach Davies in the fourth inning. With two runners on and two out, Dante Bichette Jr. reached on an error by Niuman Romero to score Greg Bird.

Davies allowed five hits and one walk in five innings to earn his ninth win of the season.

In the seventh inning, Jake Cave hit his fifth triple in 22 games with the Thunder to put a runner in scoring position with one out. Ben Gamel drove him home with a groundout to close the deficit to 6-2.

The Thunder had a pair of late opportunities to tie the game. In the eighth against Julio DePaula, the Thunder loaded the bases with nobody out. Bowie Closer Oliver Drake entered and struck out Bichette Jr. for the first out then served up a two-run double to Casey Stevenson. Stevenson's double made it 6-4 and despite a walk to Ali Castillo, Drake was able to get out of the inning without further damage. In the ninth inning, the Thunder had the tying run at the plate after a leadoff single, but were unable to get any closer.

Tyler Austin had his second straight three-hit game on Saturday night. Greg Bird went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and two run scored. The Thunder lost despite out-hitting the Baysox, 12-7.

The Thunder complete their six-game homestand with a 5:05 first pitch on Sunday night against the Bowie Baysox. The Thunder starter is RHP Jaron Long (5-0, 2.78), LHP Tim Berry (5-7, 3.60) will go for the Baysox.
