METAIRIE, La. -- The Tacoma Rainiers ran out of rallies in a 5-4 series opening loss to the New Orleans Zephyrs at Zephyrs Field on Tuesday night.
Ketel Marte's two-run double in the third inning guided the Rainiers to an early 2-0 lead that lasted until the Zephyrs posted a three-run frame in the seventh. New Orleans' Josh Rodriguez delivered a game-tying two-run double, and Brian Bogusevic delivered a go-ahead single one out later.
Stefen Romero locked the score at 3-3 with an RBI triple in the top of the eighth, only to have the Zephyrs pull ahead again on back-to-back solo homers from Justin Bour and Mark Canha in the bottom of the inning. Ji-Man Choi brought Tacoma within a run after lining an RBI single with one out in the ninth, but that was followed by a game-ending double play one at-bat later.
The Rainiers combined to collect a total of six hits in their first meeting with the Zephyrs this season. The infielder Marte turned in the team's only two-hit effort after going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. He now has four hits in his first two Triple-A games following a promotion from Double-A Jackson on August 10.
Blake Beavan (3-1) was dealt the loss after surrendering two runs on two hits in 1.0 inning of work out of the bullpen in the eighth. Starter Andrew Carraway surrendered three hits, walked one and struck out four in 5.2 innings.
The Rainiers (63-61) look to bounce back in the second game of their four-game series at New Orleans (61-63) tomorrow, August 13. Left-hander Roenis Elias (0-0, -.--) will make his Triple-A debut for Tacoma. The Zephyrs are expected to start left-hander Brian Flynn (7-8, 4.00). First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
