August 15, 2014

LANCASTER, Calif. - Vince Velasquez dominated on the mound and the JetHawks hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in a 12-0 rout of the High Desert Mavericks on Thursday night at The Hangar.

Velasquez (6-2) fanned a career-high 11 batters over six scoreless innings. He struck out the side twice, allowed just three hits and walked two.

By the time Velasquez left the game, the JetHawks (72-51) had already built a 10-0 lead.

Tanner Mathis started the scoring in the second inning with a two-run triple. Brett Phillips followed with a double and scored on a Jack Mayfield hit.

Lancaster put the game away in the third inning. Rio Ruiz started it off with a single and scored on a Jon Kemmer double. Jobduan Morales drove in a run with a groundout and Danry Vasquez reached base with a single.

Austin Elkins followed with the first of three consecutive home runs. Elkins hit a two-run shot followed by solo home runs from Mathis and Phillips. It was the first time the JetHawks have hit back-to-back-to-back home runs this season.

The trio of homers spelled the end of the night for Jake Zokan (2-2). The starter was charged with 10 runs on 12 hits in 2 2/3 innings.

The JetHawks added to more runs in the sixth inning on a Kemmer single and Morales sacrifice fly.

Mathis ended the night a double shy of the cycle while Phillips finished a single shy.

Lancaster avoided a sweep to the Mavericks (59-63) who had won the first two games of the series including a 13-2 win on Wednesday night.

The JetHawks head to Bakersfield to begin a four-game series with the Blaze at Sam Lynn Ballpark on Friday night. Zach Morton will get the start against Mike Dennhardt. First pitch is 7:15 p.m.
