August 17, 2014

Savannah, Ga.- The Sand Gnats finished off sweep of the Greenville Drive and won their fifth straight game with a 3-2 victory Sunday afternoon. The Gnats outscored Greenville 32-9 in their four-game set.

The Gnats (37-20/81-42) broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Centerfielder Champ Stuart bunted his way aboard and scored on DH Matt Oberste's double into the leftfield corner to give the Gnats a 3-2 lead they did not relinquish.

The Drive scored first, in the top of the second inning, when catcher Danny Bethea blasted a two-run home run to left field off starter John Michael Gant. Gant struck out nine batters in his five innings, and allowed just two hits, both in the second inning.

Savannah evened the game up with two runs in the bottom of the third. First baseman Dominic Smith drove home Stuart with a double to center to even the game at 2-2.

Savannah reliever John Mincone picked up the win for his scoreless top of the sixth inning. Akeel Morris struck out one batter in the ninth for his 15th save in 16 chances.

The Gnats are off Monday and begin a six-game road trip in Rome on Tuesday night. The Gnats play their final home series of the regular season beginning next Tuesday, August 26 against the August GreenJackets.
