Cutters win a wild one in Auburn

The Crosscutters evened their series with the Doubledays Saturday night at Falcon Park in Auburn, New York with a 4-3 win.

Rhys Hoskins put the Cutters in front 1-0 in the top of the second inning with his eighth homer of the year. Hoskins powered the offense going 2 for 3 with a solo homer, a double and drove in two runs for a team high 38 RBI on the season.

Williamsport added two runs in the top of the seventh inning, Cord Sandberg reached on a bunt single and advanced to second base on a wild pitch by Auburn reliever Joseph Webb. Hoskins doubled to left field and Sandberg scored without a throw.

Wilson Garcia grounded out to second base and Hoskins moved to third base. Jose Pujols reached on a fielder's choice, fielded by first baseman Jose Marmolejos-Diaz allowing Hoskins to score and put the Cutters in front 3-0.

Cutters starting pitcher David Whitehead pitched six shutout innings scattering three hits and struck out two in a no decision.

Matt Hockenberry (1-0) allowed three runs in the Auburn seventh inning.

With the game tied at 3-3 Williamsport went back in front for good in the top of the eighth inning off Auburn reliever John Feliz (0-1). Jan Hernandez led off with a walk, Jiandido Tromp singled to left field. Sandberg advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Rhys Hoskins was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Wilson Garcia grounded out to second base and Jan Hernandez scored to make it 4-3 Cutters.

Calvin Rayburn pitched around traffic in the ninth inning including an Auburn runner thrown out at the plate in locking down his ninth save of the season.

Even with the win, State College eliminated the Cutters (31-36) from Pinckney Division playoff contention. The wild card elimination number for the Cutters remains at four.

The Cutters play the finale of the 3-game series in Auburn tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. before moving onto Batavia, New York on Monday for a brief 2-game series.

The Cutters return home on Friday, August 29, 2014 to battle Jamestown at 7:05 p.m. to begin the final home stand of the season.
