August 24, 2014

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Danny Diekroeger matched a State College Spikes record by stretching his hitting streak to 18 games, but the Spikes fell to the Jamestown Jammers, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at Russell Diethrick Park.

Diekroeger tied Brian Friday's 2007 string with a triple down the right-field line in the first inning. The Stanford product has hit .316 (25-for-79) during the streak, which goes back to August 2.

Collin Radack drove in the first Spikes (41-27) run in the fifth inning with an RBI single as part of a 2-for-3 day. Brett Wiley also produced two hits for State College, including a double.

Jamestown (31-35) jumped out in front in the fourth inning when Jordan Luplow singled in one run and Chase Simpson doubled in another. Carl Anderson then made it 3-1, Jammers, with a run-scoring double in the fifth. An error and an Elvis Escobar sacrifice fly in the sixth completed the scoring.

Simpson went 2-for-4 on the game, while Anderson, Luplow and Tyler Filliben also contributed two hits apiece. Filliben reached base a total of four times with a walk and a time hit by pitch.

Fernando Baez (2-2) started and took the loss for the Spikes, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six over five innings of work.

Jammers starter Tyler Eppler (2-2) earned the win in his fourth outing of the year against State College. Eppler yielded one run on three hits and a walk over six innings for his second straight victory. The right-hander also recorded four strikeouts.

The Spikes did not attempt a stolen base in the game after tying a club record with seven steals on Saturday night, with Darren Seferina delivering a team-record four of them.

State College remains the only team to have clinched a New York-Penn League postseason berth as they claimed the Pinckney Division title with Saturday's win over Jamestown. The Spikes now trail Hudson Valley by three games in the race for the league's best record.

After taking two of three games from Jamestown, State College will now finish a five-game road trip with a two-game set against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians) starting on Monday. State College will send right-hander Trey Nielsen (3-2) to the hill for the 7:05 p.m. matchup at Eastwood Field. Mahoning Valley is slated to start right-hander Juan Santana (1-7).

Following the road trip, the Spikes will begin a four-game homestand, the last of the 2014 regular season, on Wednesday, August 27. Williamsport and Batavia provide the opposition for the quartet of 7:05 games running until Saturday, August 30.
