The Pacific Coast League contributed more than a few players to Major League rosters over the course of the 2014 season, but it's one player who hasn't yet gotten the call who perhaps shined the brightest.
Joc Pederson, the Triple-A circuit's first member of the 30 home run/30 stolen base club since 1934, headlines the 2014 All-PCL team as announced Monday.
The Dodgers' No. 3 prospect entered the season with the weight of lofty expectations on his shoulders and was considered to be blocked by an already packed Los Angeles outfield as early as Spring Training. Stuck in Triple-A Albuquerque all season, he managed to shatter those expectations in his first trip to the PCL. Outside his 32 homers and 30 steals, the left-handed slugger leads the league with a .432 OBP and 1.012 OPS with the Isotopes while his .580 slugging percentage sits third as of Monday.
As such, he was an easy pick for an All-PCL spot in the outfield, where he is joined by Las Vegas' Matt den Dekker (.334/.407/.540) and Sacramento's Shane Peterson (.313 average, 11 homers, league-leading 86 RBIs).
Speaking of easy picks, Jimmy Nelson was an obvious choice as the right-handed pitcher representative. The 25-year-old hurler leads the league's qualified pitchers with a 1.46 ERA -- his closest competition is All-PCL left-handed pick Tsuyoshi Wada at 2.77 -- and a 0.92 WHIP. His 9.2 strikeouts-per-nine-innings rate ranks fourth.
After a brief one-start promotion in May, the Brewers called up their former top prospect for good in early July. Nelson is 2-4 with a 4.15 ERA in eight starts for the NL Central leaders.
Second baseman honoree Arismendy Alcantara is another PCL star that parlayed an impressive Triple-A campaign into a full-time Major League role. The 22-year-old switch-hitter owned a .307/.353/.537 slash line with 10 homers, 11 triples, 25 doubles and 21 steals in a breakout season for Iowa before earning his promotion to the Majors in early July. Now playing as a center fielder for the Cubs, Alcantara is batting .228 with four homers and seven steals in 41 games in the Majors.
