08/25/2014 1:37 PM ET

Springfield, MO - The St. Louis Cardinals announced on Monday that INF Greg Garcia has been optioned to the Springfield Cardinals from St. Louis. Garcia is expected to be in the starting lineup for Springfield tonight as they take on the Tulsa Drillers at 7:10pm at Hammons Field.

Garcia, 25, became the 61st former Springfield Cardinal to make his Major League Debut for St. Louis when he was called up on April 28, after spending the first month of the season with the Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A). The infielder has suited up in nine games for St. Louis this season, including a pinch-hit appearance in last night's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. He collected his first big league hit in his first call-up of the season, knocking a double against the Milwaukee Brewers on April 30.

In between trips to the Majors, the El Cajon, California native has put together a .275 average with eight home runs and 40 RBIs through 103 games with Memphis this year. Garcia spent the entirety of 2013 with the Redbirds as well, after playing an instrumental role on the 2012 Texas League Champion Springfield Cardinals squad, hitting .284 with 10 homers and 51 RBIs through 124 games for Springfield that year.

Garcia was originally selected by the Cardinals in the 7th round of the 2010 June Draft out of the University of Hawaii, where he was a college teammate of fellow St. Louis Cardinal, 2B Kolten Wong.
