Brault Named Carolina League "Pitcher of the Week"

Southpaw Becomes Second Keys Pitcher to Win Honor in 2014
August 25, 2014

FREDERICK, MD -The Frederick Keys are pleased to announce that Keys left-handed pitcher Steven Brault has been named the Carolina League "Pitcher of the Week" for August 18-24. The announcement was made on Monday morning by the Carolina League office. Brault becomes the fifth Keys pitcher to take home a weekly honor this year, and the second pitcher to receive the honor. Parker Bridwell (May 12-19) was the last pitcher to earn a weekly honor, while Mike Yastrzemski, Michael Burgess and Adrian Marin have all garnered "Player of the Week" honors earlier this season.

This is the first "Pitcher of the Week" honor for Brault, 22, who receives recognition after an outstanding debut with the orange and black. Tossing six shutout innings last Thursday at Carolina, the lefty gave up only one single and allowed just two baserunners all game. He walked one and struck out one.

Taking the rotation spot of Branden Kline who was promoted to Double-A Bowie last Wednesday, Brault was one of the South Atlantic League's top arms at the time of his call-up. Pitching for the Delmarva Shorebirds, he paced the circuit in WHIP (1.04), was second in strikeouts (115) and batting average against (.227) and sixth in ERA (3.05). A pitcher with outstanding command, Brault also sported a strikeout/walk ratio of better than 4:1.

Rated the Orioles No. 14 prospect according to Baseball America entering this season, Brault was selected by Baltimore in the 11th round of the 2013 Draft out of Regis (CO) University. He spent all of 2013 at Short-Season Aberdeen where he went 1-2 with a 2.09 ERA over 12 starts. A two-way player in college, he ranked ninth in Division II in strikeouts (103) his junior season and was among the nation's leaders with 20 doubles.

Frederick concludes its regular season road schedule on Monday night, when the Keys play the final game of their series against Potomac. Parker Bridwell (5-10, 4.79) makes the start for Frederick and will be opposed by Nationals right-hander Brian Rauh (2-2, 4.00). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source. The Keys return to Harry Grove Stadium for their final homestand on Tuesday, when the Salem Red Sox come to town. For tickets, fans can call 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
