Ryan O'Sullivan pitched seven shutout innings on Tuesday night to lead the Fightin Phils (60-76) to a 4-1 win over the Portland Sea Dogs (85-51). The Fightin Phils scored all four of their runs in the final three innings against Portland.
Both starting pitchers were locked in a pitcher's duel for the first six innings as Ryan O'Sullivan and Eduardo Rodriguez each gave up just five hits. O'Sullivan allowed just seven base runners through the first six innings as he faced 25 batters. Rodriguez allowed just five base runners through the first six innings as he faced 22 batters.
The Fightin Phils score off Rodriguez in the top of the 7th inning as KC Serna scored off a wild pitch to give Reading a 1-0 lead. Serna singled with two outs then moved to third base on a single from Zach Collier. Peter Lavin hit a sacrifice fly off reliever Mike McCarthy in the top of the 8th inning to score Albert Cartwright and give the Fightin Phils a 2-0 lead.
Sean Coyle of Portland hit a home run off reliever Colton Murray in the bottom of the 8th inning to cut the Fightins lead to 2-1. Serna extended the lead to 3-1 for the Fightins off McCarthy in the top of the 9th inning as he hit a RBI single to score Aaron Altherr. Edgar Duran added insurance off McCarthy as he plated Serna with a fielder's choice to give Reading a 4-1 lead.
Ryan O'Sullivan (6-8) turned in seven shutout innings to earn the win as he gave up six hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Colton Murray allowed one run in his one inning of work in the bottom of the 8th inning.
The Fightin Phils and Portland Sea Dogs are back at it again tomorrow night at Hadlock Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm as Adam Loewen (2-5, 3.18 ERA) will be getting the start for the Fightin Phils.
