Aaron Nola exited the 2014 season on a high note as he delivered a five-shutout inning performance to out-duel New York Yankees top prospect Luis Severino as Reading (63-76) won 3-0 over the Trenton Thunder (67-72). The shutout for Reading was their first since 8/20 at Bowie.
Aaron Nola and Luis Severino of the Trenton Thunder each exchanged scoreless innings through the first four innings as Nola allowed just two base runners while Severino allowed four base runners. Severino was pulled from the game in the top of the 5th inning with two outs. He walked Zach Collier but retired Logan Moore and Albert Cartwright in the next at-bats. Phil Wetherell entered the game to face Carlos Alonso and gave up a RBI double as Collier would score to give Reading a 1-0 lead.
Aaron Nola (2-0) left after five shutout innings as he gave up just four hits with two strikeouts to earn his second win. Matt Hoffman entered the game in the bottom of the 6th inning. Hoffman gave up two hits and struck out one batter in his lone inning of work.
Zach Collier led off the top of the 7th inning with a double off Wetherell then moved to third base on a groundout from Logan Moore. Albert Cartwright grounded out for the second out of the inning then Carlos Alonso hit a RBI double to score Collier and give Reading a 2-0 lead. Peter Lavin hit a RBI single to score Alonso in the next at-bat to extend the lead to 3-0.
Austin Wright pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief as he walked three batters while recording two strikeouts. Colton Murray entered the game with one out in the bottom of the 8th inning. Murray earned his fifth save as he pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
The Fightin Phils and Trenton Thunder play at 7:05 pm on Saturday evening at Arm & Hammer Park. Severino Gonzalez (9-13, 4.72 ERA) gets the start for the Fightin Phils.
