Sandberg Plays Hero in Cutters Win

August 30, 2014

The Crosscutters out slugged the Jamestown Jammers 7-6 Saturday night at Susquehanna Bank Park at Historic Bowman Field in the last meeting between the two clubs

The Jammers franchise moves to Morgantown, West Virginia in 2015, so it was the last time the "Jamestown Jammers" played the Cutters.

Cutters starting pitcher Mitch Gueller was roughed up in the first inning for three runs on three hits and an error. He then battled his way through four innings, not allowing another run.

Chase Harris had an RBI double to get the Cutters on the board in the third inning followed by the ninth homer of the year for Rhys Hoskins in the fifth inning to cut the margin to 3-2.

Jamestown added two runs on four hits in the fifth inning against Cutters reliever Bryan Sova to take a 5-2 lead.

The Cutters answered with a 2-run fifth inning of their own taking advantage of a wild pitch and throwing error by the jammers catcher to cut the lead to 5-3 when Deivi Grullon scored. Emmanuel Marrero scored on an RBI single by Jiandido Tromp to cut the lead to 5-4.

Deivi Grullon hit a go ahead 2-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Cutters in front 6-5.

Matt Hockenberry (2-0) would go four innings in relief but surrendered the tying run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to knot the game at 6-6.

Facing Jammers reliever Luis Urena (2-2), Cord Sandberg hit his fifth homer of the season leading off the seventh inning to give the Cutters a 7-6 lead and Hockenberry wrapped up the 9th to give the Cutters the win.

The Cutters (33-41) conclude the season series with the Jammers going (8-2)
